Dombey and Son to air on France 3, a powerful adaptation of the Dickens novel directed by Laurent Jaoui.

Dombey and Son (French title La Maison Dombais et Fils), a 2 X 90-minutes mini-series directed by Laurent Jaoui to air on France 3 Thursday June 7 and Thursday June 14 at 8:40 pm, is a modern and gripping adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel of the same name.

Though little known in France, Dombey and Son is considered in the UK to be one of the writer’s greatest novels, on par with Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. The novel tells the story of a young girl’s struggle for the love and attention of her father, whose affection is entirely devoted to his son. The son’s death several years later leaves her to face her father’s indifference towards her alone; an indifference that turns to outright hatred when he remarries.

This very subtle series about love’s injustice, coupled with a cutting look at the comedy of the human condition, is directed by Laurent Jaoui (Colomba, La fonte des neiges, L’affaire Kergalen…), with the script co-written by the director and the Russian screenwriter Alexandre Abachian (who has collaborated in the past with Nikita Mikhalkov).

The mini-series benefits from an A-class cast, marked by the artful interplay between actors Christophe Malavoy and the gracefully energetic Déborah François. They’re joined by a wealth of talented actors whose skills take viewers on a roller-coaster ride of emotions: Marie-France Pisier, Pierre Santini, Nicolas Briançon, the young Danny Martinez and Caroline Bourg, among many others.

Dombey and Son is produced by Sandra d’Aboville, the seasoned producer of over a dozen TV movies for GTV (a Télé Images subsidiary, and part of Marathon Group), among which figures the smash-hit mini-series La Nuit du Meurtre, also produced for France 3.
The series was filmed on-location in Normandy and in the Paris region from July to September 2006.
